If you give regular compost or fertilizer then it won't be a problem. There wouldn't be a concept called intercropping if it was a problem. Having more free space and more nutrients is always better but just use lot of mulch and/or compost regularly.

I planted one 2 years ago and unfortunately died at 10 months or so. I live in plant Hardiness zone 9a in TX. I think a combination of disease and 100° + Temps made it kick the bucket.... trying again with a stalk finally getting roots and should transfer to a pot soon.

You can simply leave the roots there and mix up with fresh soil. Roots breakdown to be excellent nutrients.
